A desert-meets-sea sanctuary on Oman’s southern coast

Set where the Arabian Sea meets open desert, Alila Hinu Bay feels like a modern Arabian palace dropped gently onto a vast stretch of sand. One direction is all water, dolphins and passing dhows; the other is pure, sun-warmed wilderness. Space is part of the luxury here, from the wide shoreline to the calm, low-slung layout that lets everything breathe.

The design leans into Omani romance without going theatrical. Think archways, patterned screens and warm textures, softened by clean lines and a palette that mirrors sand, stone and sky. It’s quietly cinematic, especially as the light shifts at the edges of the day.

Rooms and suites keep the mood serene and expansive, with a strong sense of privacy. The pool villas are the ones to know, with outdoor seating made for stargazing and bathrooms that invite slow, unhurried rituals. Wake early and the resort feels almost hushed, the kind of calm that makes you forget what time it is.

Alila Hinu Bay was, without question, the highlight of our entire trip. We arrived after a very disappointing night at another hotel, tired from travelling and honestly just hoping for a better experience. We also arrived around four hours before the official check-in time, so we fully expected to have to wait. Instead, the team made sure our room was ready within roughly 30 minutes to an hour, which we really appreciated after the journey we'd had. From the moment we walked in, everything changed. We were welcomed with hibiscus tea — such a small gesture, but after the night we'd had, it was exactly what we needed. It immediately made us feel calmer and set the tone for the rest of our stay. My husband was unwell during the trip, and the staff asked if there was anything they could do for him. I asked whether they might be able to make him some ginger tea with lemon and honey, not really expecting much, and they brought it exactly as requested. That level of care continued throughout our entire stay. Everything was extraordinary — the rooms, the surroundings, the food, the service and, above all, the people. The Oasis Pool was closed for maintenance during our stay, and on our last day my husband and I mentioned that we were sad to leave without having experienced it. We asked if there was any chance we could use it, again fully expecting the answer to be no. Instead, the staff kindly allowed us to, explaining that there would be no lifeguard or pool bar available, which we were completely fine with. We ended up spending hours there with the entire pool to ourselves, and it became one of the most magical and memorable parts of our trip. It felt incredibly special. Even our departure summed up the level of hospitality here. We were driving back to Dubai and accidentally arrived for breakfast around 30–45 minutes before the buffet opened because we had mixed up the timings and wanted to get an early start on the road. Rather than simply telling us breakfast wasn't open yet, the kitchen staff accommodated us. They made us breakfast, packed some food for us to take on the road, washed our water bottles and filled them with ice-cold water for the journey. Those are the kinds of gestures you don't forget. There are also a few members of staff we would especially love to thank. I unfortunately didn't manage to catch everyone's names, but a very special thank you to the lovely Indian lady who drove us to and from our room on the golf cart, to Liana at the spa, and to the half-Sudanese, half-Omani gentleman who helped make our kayaking experience so memorable. And, of course, thank you to every other member of the team who made us feel so looked after throughout our stay. The food was amazing, the resort was beautiful, but it was the genuine hospitality that made Alila Hinu Bay unforgettable. We drove around 14 hours from Dubai to Salalah (stopping in Muscat), and I can genuinely say this stay made the journey worth it. Words don't quite express how wonderful our time here was. We left with memories we will always treasure, and if we ever make that long drive to Salalah again, Alila Hinu Bay is somewhere we would return to without hesitation. Thank you for giving us one of those rare travel experiences we'll still be talking about years from now.
