Where stone, water and the Alps fall into silence

Deep in the mountain village of Vals, 7132 Hotel feels less like a conventional Alpine stay and more like a world built around architecture, thermal water and stillness. Dark quartzite, vast panes of glass and sharp contemporary lines sit against the softness of the valley, creating a striking contrast between human design and raw landscape. Nothing competes for attention here. The mountains, the silence and the changing light are allowed to shape the entire experience.

Inside, Japanese precision meets Scandinavian restraint through pale woods, tactile fabrics and beautifully uncluttered spaces. Terraces pull the valley closer, while freestanding bathtubs, steam showers and deeply considered details turn even the quietest moments into part of the stay. The Kengo Kuma-designed Penthouse Suites take this dialogue with nature even further, surrounding guests with glass, sweeping mountain views and private onsen baths that make the landscape feel almost within reach.

Then come the thermal baths. Designed by Peter Zumthor from 60,000 slabs of locally quarried quartzite, they are among Switzerland’s most extraordinary architectural spaces. Shadowed corridors open into pools of varying temperatures, mineral-rich water flows directly from the St Peter spring and every chamber plays with sound, texture and light. Outside, warm water meets cold Alpine air beneath the surrounding peaks, creating a moment that feels elemental, cinematic and almost impossible to leave.
