A Cambodian island escape made for barefoot luxury

The Royal Sands Koh Rong sits on a paradise island off Cambodia’s coast, where coconut palms frame immaculate white sand and the Gulf of Thailand stretches out like a reason to slow down. Cane chairs swing in the breeze, the days feel sun-warmed and unhurried, and everything is tuned to the shoreline.

Architecture and interiors keep the mood light and coastal: crisp white walls, neat thatchwork, and contemporary spaces that feel fresh against all that tropical green. Villas are scattered through gardens for privacy, with private pools in many for quiet dips between beach walks.

Time here moves between sea and shade. A beachfront saltwater pool stays open day and night, lined with loungers for long, lazy hours. As the light softens, cocktails gather around the fire pit and sunset becomes the evening’s main event.

After over two weeks of travelling we were looking for a quality hotel to relax and Royal sands hit the mark. A real touch of paradise and would highly recommend. The service was outstanding throughout the resort from front office, restaurants, cleaning staff poll staff etc. Each family is given a resort assistant like a concierge to assist with your needs. In our case Sreypa did a fantastic job for us making sure we had everything we needed at all times. Rarely have we stayed where service was this flawless. The location is stunning. Beautiful pristine powdery white sand beach. Our only regret is whilst we were there in August the sea was too rough and it was too windy to fully appreciate the beach. The resort is isolated but for us that was fine as we had no plans to explore. We had two superior villas which were beautiful and spacious with a huge bathroom and equally large outside shower. The resort is beautifully landscaped full of lush vegetation. It’s quite spread out, but buggy services are available within minutes if required. The spa is really beautiful and calming. We enjoyed the massages which were very good. We are all our meals at the resort for 6 nights. We are vegan so it was great that they had a fairly extensive vegan/vegetarian menus at both restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On top of this they can generally with notice make bespoke dishes for you. It is worth warning them in advance as things like soya milk and tofu have to be ordered from the mainland. We greatly appreciated the lengths that the catering staff and management went too to accommodate our needs. The hotel is relatively pricey compared to many other resorts on the island but I think you get more than your moneys worth at the Royal Sands in terms of service, surroundings and quality of accommodation.

We had such a wonderful stay at Royal Sands Koh Rong. The island itself is absolutely beautiful — pristine white sand, incredible sunsets, a gorgeous setting and a beautiful pool. Everything felt peaceful, precise and incredibly well looked after. The service was impeccable throughout. A particularly special mention to Sela, who made everything completely effortless. Whatever we needed, it was never any trouble — we simply sent a message through the app and received an immediate response. The app itself was brilliant and made it so easy to stay connected with the team throughout our stay. We even asked if we could have a table set up on our terrace for dinner, and it was arranged straight away. We also had fantastic service from Sreyroth at dinner, Sokheng at breakfast, lunch and for drinks, as well as Sina, Vin, Sawat and Lyda, who all deserve a mention for making our stay so enjoyable. The lovely lady around the pool who cleaned our glasses and brought snacks and cold towels was also wonderful, although unfortunately I didn’t catch her name. The beach was beautifully clean and very well maintained. The hotel provided mosquito and insect repellent, which was a lovely touch — I am normally the person who gets bitten constantly and somehow didn’t get a single bite during our stay! The fire show was genuinely the best we have ever seen and was such a highlight of the trip. We would have loved to see a little more entertainment like this throughout the week, as it really added to the atmosphere in the evenings. The happy hours were also very much appreciated and a great addition to afternoons and evenings at the resort. The spa was delightful and such a relaxing experience. We did notice a slight difference in experience levels between the masseurs, so perhaps a little more consistency in training would make an already lovely spa even better. The only other small improvements would be having both restaurants open each evening to give guests a little more choice, and providing clearer information about the boat timings and transfers from the beginning. Once we understood how everything worked, it was absolutely fine and very helpful. Overall, everything was friendly, thoughtful and beautifully done. The setting is spectacular, but it was the service and attention to detail that really made the experience. A truly special few days in paradise and somewhere we would happily return to.
