TOP WORLD HOTEL Certificate
What is that?
Evaluation by our Hotel Advisor.
While surrounded by an historical and slightly decadent feeling of the adjoining buildings, the NH Gran Hotel Calderón certainly stands out for its modern and sharp lines amongst the baroque and Art Nouveau style of the residences next door.
All the services – including reception, restaurant and concierge – are located on the ground floor, where a quite futuristic style with dominant tones of white allows few pops of red to contaminate the aesthetic cleanness of the ambience, while an enormous display covers an entire wall with images of the city and its symbols.
All the Guestrooms are located from the 2nd floor to the 10th – where for those allowed to stay on the highest accommodations – the view is absolutely incredible. The 2nd floor hosts the Meeting rooms and related facilities, while the 11th floor is home to the ELEVEN BCN Rooftop Bar and pool.
The Room itself if quite comfortable, spacious, tastefully decorated and elegant, with white furnishings, polished wooden floors and red statement armchairs, even if lacking of a proper wardrobe and storage space for the Guests visiting Barcelona for more than a weekend.
Built on a former Theatre – the NH Gran Hotel Calderón offers clean ambiences within the spaces reserved to the Guestrooms.
A recent renovation lets appreciate the materials used – mostly matching the white and pale tones of the aforementioned reception – while the outdoor terrace lacks of a true identity and meaning, providing a couple of sun-beds with no proper sun protection and artificial turf floor.
For those being this close to the upstairs Rooftop, this comes with few downsides: the visitors – both residents and foreigns – reaching and leaving the bar cause not an indifferent noise at night, especially if located closely the elevators.
The walls are not properly soundproof as the ceiling, where it was possible to hear the Staff setting the bar upon closing time, late in the night.
The NH Collection Gran Calderon in Barcelona has a primary location few steps away from Passeig de Gracia and the central Plaça de Catalunya – ideal for shopping, sightseeing and reaching all the major attractions within the city center.
It’s location is easily reachable from the Barcelona El Prat Airport with a 25 minutes ride. Public transportation is easily accessible all around the NH Collection, while a more authentic way to explore the Eixample neighbourhood and the Barrio Gotico is by foot.
This is about as central as you can get, just a three-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya and a five-minute walk to Gaudí’s wonderfully iridescent façade of Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gracia.
Food & Drink
The food itself is extremely fresh and tasty – where at breakfast the quality of the products is distinctive – fresh juices, churros, salami or sushi is available to satisfy the most demanding Guests.
The Room Service for breakfast instead, should need more care and attention in achieving a complete and balanced proposal.
The stand-out establishment however, is the Eleven BCN Bar & Terrace, located on the roof terrace, which offers more jaw-dropping views across the Barcelona skyline. The cocktails proposed reflect the warm and southern identity of Barcelona, spacing from fresh versions of a mojito to classical cocktails revisited.
The Team is responsive and attentive to the Guests demands – while the facilities expectations fall short where a proper SPA is missing and the only pool is located on the rooftop, making of it a pure aesthetic feature on the cold months.
The breakfast, served on the ground floor from 7AM to 11AM, is generous and offers a wide range of both sweet and savoury proposals.
The Staff matches and surpasses all the expectations in terms of service and care – especially to the breakfast Staff which helped us at every step in the morning – illustrating all the options available and suggesting us some local delights.
Room Service is indeed available 24h, but the Night menu is reduces to 4 or 5 options in total, not quite sufficient to match the expectations of a late-night check-in.
The highlight of the hotel’s facilities is its roof terrace, complete with a good-sized pool and some of the most amazing views you’ll find at a city centre hotel.
There’s also a small gym with bikes and weight machines.
