A rose-pink retreat in the gardens of Ponta Delgada

Above the historic streets of Ponta Delgada, a 19th-century pink house rises through a canopy of old trees, with flashes of the Atlantic appearing between the leaves. Once the home of José do Canto, one of São Miguel’s most influential botanists, Solar dos Cantos is now an intimate boutique hotel wrapped in 1.5 hectares of gardens. The city centre is only a 15-minute walk away, yet beyond the gates, birdsong, tropical foliage and quiet lawns make the Azorean capital feel wonderfully distant.

Inside, original tiled floors, decorative friezes, a sculpted marble fireplace and a grand chandelier meet contemporary furniture, natural textures and pieces from the house’s 19th-century collection. The former library, study and drawing rooms now hold individually designed bedrooms, where botanical tones, vintage details and leafy views create the atmosphere of an elegant private residence. The Suite adds more space and a secluded terrace above the trees.

The grounds set the pace of the stay. Camellias, cryptomerias, tropical plants and century-old trees shape a landscape of shaded paths, open lawns and glimpses of the ocean. Tucked among the foliage, the green-tiled pool, wooden deck and Jacuzzi invite long afternoons between water and shade, while drinks, light dishes and local cheese boards from the Honesty Bar keep everything pleasantly within reach.
