Just north of Aix-en-Provence, Auberge La Coste occupies a quieter corner of the celebrated Château La Coste estate, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and wooded hills. Rather than following the formality of a traditional luxury hotel, it unfolds like a small village, with rose-coloured courtyards, cypress trees, independent boutiques and inviting places to gather.
Its interiors take their cue from the landscape. Natural materials, muted tones and an easy sense of simplicity create rooms that feel calm without being overly styled. The result is comfortable, tactile and unmistakably Provençal, allowing the light, views and rhythm of the estate to remain at the centre of the stay.
Art and architecture are part of daily life here. Paths wind through vines, oaks and stone pines, revealing large-scale works and buildings by some of the most important creative names of recent decades. Jean Nouvel’s winery rises among the vineyards, while Tadao Ando’s architecture brings together concrete, water and sky with striking precision. The experience feels less like following a conventional gallery route and more like encountering art in direct conversation with the land.

Calme, sérénité et tranquillité dans un cadre agréable. La vue sur les vignes est splendide
Nous avons vécu une soirée un peu particulière car à notre arrivée nous avons appris qu’une panne d’électricité paralysait le domaine. Nous n’avions en effet pas vu les emails reçus de Booking et de l’hôtel pour nous alerter. Le gérant nous a proposé d’annuler notre réservation sans frais mais nous avons décidé de rester. Nous avons passé une excellente soirée au restaurant du chef Francis Mallmann où nous avons mangé un coquelet et une entrecôte cuisinée au four à bois. C’était incroyable! Le lendemain matin, l’électricité n’était toujours pas revenue. Les équipes s’étaient démenée pour préparer un magnifique petit déjeuner dont des œufs brouillés au feu de bois. Un véritable régal. Nous avons malgré tout pu louer les vélos électriques de l’hôtel (petit privilège pour les résidents, seuls autorisés à faire le tour à vélo). Nous avons fait le tour des 46 œuvres colossales qui ornent les vignes du château. Nous avons été tout particulièrement époustouflés par l’araignée de Louise Bourgeois, le Calder qui agrémente une pièce d’eau, Mater Earth de Prune Nourry et la galerie d’Oscar Niemeyer. Il ne nous a pas été possible de payer notre note en partant, les ordinateurs et terminaux bancaires étant hors service. Nous avons eu la bonne surprise de ne payer que notre note au restaurant. Nous attendions un geste commercial mais il a été plus qu’élégant. Le personnel s’est plié en quatre pour nous satisfaire. Malgré elles imprévus.
