Else Kuala Lumpur

A design forward retreat where Kuala Lumpur softens at the edges
In the thick of Chinatown’s energy, Else Kuala Lumpur feels like a beautifully judged change of pace. The city rushes around it, but inside, the mood shifts towards something calmer, more tactile and more composed. Set within a restored 1930s building, the hotel brings together heritage structure, contemporary Malaysian design and a quietly creative spirit that gives it far more personality than a standard city stay.
Rooms and suites are designed to soothe rather than simply impress. Natural materials, muted tones and thoughtfully placed artworks create a sense of ease, while details such as Aesop bath products, Bluetooth speakers, local minibar treats and sculptural furnishings add warmth and depth. Even with the neighbourhood’s movement just outside, the atmosphere inside feels cocooning, with some rooms opening onto sweeping city views.
Up on the rooftop, the tone lifts again. The saltwater infinity pool looks out across Kuala Lumpur from a brick lined terrace made for slow swims, sunset drinks and long pauses above the streets below. There may be no traditional spa, but the flotation pods bring in a more unexpected kind of wellness, one that suits the hotel’s gentle, modern take on restoration.

Reviews
I stayed here one weekend recently and was very satisfied with the room, the service and the entire hotel in general. It was an unforgettable experience when I walked into the hotel, from the loud noises and hustle and hustle of Chinatown and straight into calmness and quite inside the hotel after the front door closed behind me. It wasn't just the noise, even the difference in illumination was sharply noticeable. The bright afternoon sun was replaced by dim, soft lighting and it provided an aura of serenity at once. The check in process was smooth and the team was welcoming and friendly. My room is huge and airy. Even my balcony is spacious. I had a fun time exploring this building from top to bottom and spent a great weekend here amidst their great facilities I.e. the pool, gym and the restaurant. Could not book the floating pods but will try next time.
