Along Zanzibar’s quieter northeast coast, Matemwe Attitude follows the rhythm of the island rather than trying to change it. Set between tropical gardens and a long sweep of beach facing Mnemba Island, this adults-only retreat brings together local craftsmanship, open spaces and the colours of the Indian Ocean. Fishing boats still cross the lagoon beyond the shore, while the design looks to Zanzibar itself for inspiration, giving the hotel a sense of place that feels immediate rather than decorative.
Its 74 villas draw on Swahili architecture through curved coral-toned walls, patterned screens, coloured glass and traditional makuti roofs woven from coconut leaves. Hand-cast terrazzo and furniture made in Tanzania continue the local story inside. Some villas open directly onto an infinity pool, while others come with their own private pool. Closest to the ocean, the Beachfront Villas add direct access to the sand, private terraces and uninterrupted views across the lagoon. Televisions have deliberately been left out, allowing the surroundings to remain the main distraction.
Zanzibar also finds its way onto the table. Chakula Chakula moves between international dishes and island flavours, while Fukwe brings wood-fired pizza and relaxed dining close to the beach. Upepo serves drinks and lighter food beside the pool, and Karibu Lounge offers another informal place to settle in during the day. Fresh fish, local spices and ingredients grown on the island give the food a connection to its setting without making the experience feel overly formal.

An excellent choice for a truly rejuvenating stay in Zanzibar.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ein rundum wunderbarer Aufenthalt Wir hatten einen wunderschönen und sehr erholsamen Aufenthalt im Matemwe Attitude Zanzibar. Besonders hervorheben möchten wir das außergewöhnlich freundliche und aufmerksame Personal sowie die sehr gepflegte und liebevoll gestaltete Anlage. Man merkt jederzeit, dass hier großer Wert darauf gelegt wird, dass sich die Gäste wohlfühlen. Ein ganz besonderes Dankeschön geht an Lilian vom Zimmerservice. Sie hat unser Zimmer jeden Tag hervorragend und mit großer Sorgfalt gereinigt. Alles war stets sauber, ordentlich und liebevoll hergerichtet. Auch Faida vom Fukwe-Restaurant möchten wir ganz besonders erwähnen. Sie hat uns während unseres gesamten Aufenthalts immer herzlich und aufmerksam betreut und uns zu unserer vollsten Zufriedenheit versorgt. Vielen Dank dafür! Auch das Essen hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Die Küche ist landestypisch geprägt und wird durch leichte internationale Einflüsse ergänzt. Die Speisen waren immer frisch, lecker und abwechslungsreich. Hier findet wirklich jeder etwas, das ihm schmeckt. Es ist sicherlich kein klassischer Strandurlaub, bei dem man den ganzen Tag an einem breiten Sandstrand verbringt. Dafür bietet das Matemwe Attitude eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre und vor allem Ruhe und Erholung. Für uns war genau das eine wunderbare Erfahrung und wir können das Hotel absolut weiterempfehlen. Was uns besonders beeindruckt hat: Die Mitarbeiter versuchen wirklich, nahezu jeden Wunsch möglich zu machen. Es wird sich um alles gekümmert, man wird aufmerksam umsorgt und fühlt sich vom ersten bis zum letzten Tag herzlich willkommen. Vielen Dank an das gesamte Team für diese wunderschöne Zeit. What an incredible hotel! We stayed for 7 nights following our stay in Stone Town. We had a deluxe villa with our own private pool. The room- without fault, brilliantly designed with so much space for our clothes and us. The bedroom was beautiful with a very comfortable bed and so private, looking out to our garden and pool. The hotel itself is gorgeous and the team that work there among the best we’ve ever met. Special thank yous to Dai, Saggio, Lillian, Martha, Mary, Shadrack… but honestly every one was so helpful, so welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make our stay. The food, delicious and plentiful, entertainment varied and kept us amused through the week. Would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you to the whole team for making this one of our most wonderful memorable holidays.
