An exclusive retreat between the plains of Marakele and the Waterberg Mountains
Hidden within a private section of Marakele National Park, Marataba Safari Lodge looks out over vast plains, winding riverbanks and red-tinged peaks, with a sense of space and seclusion that is increasingly rare to find. Wildlife moves through the landscape with extraordinary freedom, from the Big Five to rare black rhino and exceptional birdlife, yet the atmosphere remains calm, intimate and deeply restorative.
The lodge offers a lighter, more contemporary vision of safari. Its tented suites are designed to keep the bush constantly in view, with canvas, stone and timber softening the boundary between indoors and out. Private decks open directly onto the wilderness, freestanding baths and outdoor showers heighten the feeling of immersion, and every detail is designed to provide comfort without ever drawing attention away from the landscape. The result is luxurious yet never excessive, allowing nature to remain the true focal point.
What makes Marataba so special is the way each day unfolds so naturally between adventure and stillness. Mornings begin with expertly guided safaris through the reserve, while in the afternoon guests head back into the bush as the light softens over the plains. Beyond the game drives, there are guided walks, water safaris along the winding Matlabas River, extraordinary skies to take in after sunset, and the unforgettable opportunity to spend a night at Thabametsi Treehouse, suspended above the bush beneath the vast African sky. The lodge’s setting in a malaria-free area adds to the sense of ease that defines the experience. Back at the lodge, the rhythm slows again, with a pool set among greenery, in-suite spa treatments and long, quiet moments on your private deck.
Pick up a car at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport and follow the R21, N1 and N4 for a drive of a little over four hours. The roads have been recently improved, so a 4x4 is not necessary, but it’s worth setting off early as access to the lodge is not permitted after 6pm. Free private parking is available on site and no reservation is required.
